Which is right for my Application? PE or PVC

If you are a pipe manufacturer or construction worker or require household setup, always wonder what are the differences and applications between PVC and PE pipe.

What are the common in PE and PVC pipes?

Both PVC and PE are made with comprise of thermoplastic materials like Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and Polyethylene (PE). Both PVC and PE material used for pipe extrusion and provide better products than materials like concrete and steel.

The PVC and PE pipes are widely used to transport large volumes of liquids like water, fertilizer, hazardous chemicals with high velocity. These plastic pipes are able to maintain velocity with less drag and turbulence than the concrete and metal pipes. The concrete and metal pipes have high resistance to scale and buildup. The PE and PVC are maintaining the temperature in the pipeline system and are resistant to various chemicals, different environmental factors, and fungi in soils. Both the PVC and PE pipes used for a longer time and it is a cost-effective option for different applications.

The PE and PVC have so many similarities so what is the exact difference between these?

PVC Pipes

The PVC is light-weight, inexpensive and a rigid thermoplastic and to manufacture it the twin-screw pipe extruder due to the harshness of material in a raw state. The PVC pipes are less sensitive to thermal expansion (elongation) than the PE pipes. PVC pipe system is exposed to fluctuating external or internal temperature and it is protected from shrinking and expanding of pipe. The heat distortion of PVC pipes started at over 60o C or 140o F and with excessive cold, the pipe becomes brittle when it is frozen. And that’s why the PVC pipes are not suitable for kitchen drain application or in open conditions in harsh weather.

Some of the PVC pipes are not suitable for drinking water. Due to its chemical compositions and some of the other types are approved to use. The PVC pipes are widely used for sewers, water mains, drain/waste/vent, and irrigation. As the PVC pipes are UV light-sensitive and if it is installed above ground, the pipe contains the stabilizers and UV inhibitors thus it requires painting of water-based latex paint.

The PVC pipe cannot be coiled as it is rigid and it has to be rigid for transport. The total linear feet of pipe have to be store and transported linearly which increases the transport cost. There are fittings requires to joint each rigid joint of PVC pipes and the labor is required to join this which adds the cost of installation and always has to risk leaks and failure at joint at every connection point.

As the PVC pipe is stiff, the installation on uneven ground is difficult. And it requires the ground to be level for installation. Due to the rigidity of PVC pipes, it requires intermittent support for hung.

PE Pipes

The PE pipes are flexible and manufactured as continuous pieces and cut as per length. As the PE pipes are flexible and lightweight. It is easy to store and transport in coils or also cut into sections. This is easily installed on uneven ground as it is flexible and easily installed on hills, valleys, and obstacles.

The Pipe doesn’t require fittings and connectors

Like continuous connections on PVC Pipes, the PE doesn’t require. Pe is suitable for continuous, leak-free, and easily installed with minimum cost. For fusing there are special tools required, the connectors and fittings reduce the water velocity, and the friction cause pressure loss on the system so the minimum pump is used.

PE Pipe is Flexible

The PE pipe is flexible and with this property. It is used in smaller spaces and it is easy to install and maintain. These make PE pipes ideal for trenchless installations.

Durable & Long Life

The PE material has resistance to slow crack growth (SCG) and rapid crack propagation (RCP) and sticks with properties with various temperatures. PE is resistant to leak, crack, burst, tear, puncture, and chemical resistance make it useful in various applications.

The PE has toughness, durability and longevity and has a life expectancy of over 100 years.

PVC pipe is low-cost material for pressurized and it has no effect of various temperature fluctuations. The PE pipes are a good option for drinking water supply. And which is exposed to extreme temperatures where ungraded or if it is required to install above ground.

What is 3-Layer Pipe Technology?

The PVC and PE are the best choices for manufacturers who want to take benefits like cost-effective, environment friendly, and versatility of 3-layer pipe technology. The 3-layer pipes are made with a 3-layer die head and it is extruded inner and outer layer separate with a core which is of a different material. These 3-layer pipes meet the technical standards of high-quality polymer with a single layer pipe with cost-effective by using an inexpensive material for the core. For core, there is regrind material is used. These 3-layer pipes are versatile as with adding different layer materials it is used to handle various fluids.
