Indian Plastic Industry

Indian Plastic Industry comprises more than 2000 exporters. There are around 4 million people employed in more than 30,000 processing units across the country. Gujarat a western Indian state is the biggest hub with over 6000 processing units. 85 to 90% of total units are small and medium-scale enterprises.

In India, the main plastic processing technologies are Injection Molding which holds 58%, Extrusion 30%, Blow Molding 10%, and others 2%.

Raw Material Supplier

As per an estimation, Reliance Industries supplies around 75 – 80% of all Polypropylene demand. And remaining 20% is supplied by Government companies like IOCL, Haldia Petrochemicals, BPCL, and GAIL.

 Plastic Consumption in India 

Various products made from Plastic consume Packaging 24%, Agriculture 23%, Electronic 16%, Building 8%, Houseware 10%, Transportation 4%, Furniture 1% and others 10%.

India has the highest Plastic recycling rates, estimated at about 47%. Because of the high demand for recycled plastics of PP, PET, PS, LDPE, and HDPE.

 

In the financial year 2020, India exports 7.55 Billion USD of Plastic and linoleum. From April 2019 to January 2020, India exports 7 Billion USD with 2.91 Billion USD raw material, 1.22 Billion USD plastic sheets, films, and plates, and 722.47 Million USD of Packaging Material.

The Indian Plastic industry produces and exports a wide variety of products from Plastic-molded extruded goods, polyester films, molded luggage items. Plastic woven sacks and bags, PVC, packaging, consumer goods, stationery, sanitary fittings. Electrical accessories, laminates, fishnets, medical-surgical ware, travel ware, and many more.

India also exports a wide variety of Plastic Processing Machinery, Injection Molding machines, Pipe Extrusion machines, Blow Molding Machines, Extrusion Blow Molding Machines, PVC Pipe Making Machine, Etc.

The Indian Plastic Industry has sufficient infrastructure to manufacture plastic products and machines. There are plenty of skilled workers in India for polymer producers, plastic process machines, and mold manufacturers.

The main reason for the Indian Plastic Industry is the easy availability of raw material. There is easy availability of raw material in the country as manufacturers don’t have to rely on imports. The main raw materials are polypropylene, HDPE, LDPE, PVC, etc.

Recently, the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals had approved 10 Plastic Parks in different states. Assam has 1, Madhya Pradesh has 2, Odisha has 1, Tamil Nadu has 1, Jharkhand has 1, Uttarakhand 1, and Chhattisgarh has 1. The remaining two are under process.
